Rhinoplasty, or cosmetic nose surgery is one of the most common cosmetic surgery procedures and for a very good reason. Altering your nose can have a huge impact on the aesthetics of your face, since it is one of the most central points of reference in the face.

Any cosmetic work on the nose should not be done on women younger than 16 years and 19 years for men.
Cosmetic nose surgery is achieved by changing the shape or appearance of the nose by working on the underlying cartilage and/or bone.
The procedure can be well planned and results can be exactly what the patient requires since a nose job can make the nose thinner, wider, longer, shorter, remove bumps, narrow the nostrils, correct a twisted or deflected nose, refine a bulbous tip or reshape it etc.
It must however be kept in mind that there is statistically a 20% chance that you may want to have revision surgery done, since nasal surgery is not as easy as what some people may think, but on this subject, please be very clear on what is possible - to create a 100% straight nose is near to impossible, and every face is asymmetrical in nature - that meaning that your left side is NOT a 100% mirror image of your right side.
Different ways of performing rhinoplasty
The procedure can be done either by way of "closed rhinoplasty" or "open rhinoplasty". In closed rhinoplasty the incision is confined to the inside of your nose, whereas open rhinoplasty involves an incision on the underside of your nasal tip.
Although recovery time is faster with closed rhinoplasty, the cosmetic surgeon has limited vision and maneuverability and although open rhinoplasty involves more swelling and longer recovery time, better results may be achieved with it.
A very common problem that is corrected with rhinoplasty is that of "saddle nose deformity" (also referred to as pug nose) which refers to the nose having a concavity or depression of the nasal dorsum, which results in a "saddle look-a-like" when viewed in profile.
This aesthetic problem is corrected with implants - either with autogenous material such as septal or conchal cartilage or rib or either alloplastic implants such as Gore-Tex, acrylic etc., whereas the surgeon may have to employ additional procedures to correct functionality of the nose in severe cases.
Rhinoplasty and looking younger
The angle of the nasal tip has a great effect on how old you look - a droopy nasal (under-rotated) tip ages the face.
A 90+ degree nasal tip presents the face with a younger look but the nasal tip of a male should not be over-rotated since it can have a feminizing effect and the angle should not be more than 95%.
When having rhinoplasty, your plastic surgeon may also discuss the possibility of conducting a chin augmentation, since it can help to balance not only your nose, but your entire face.

It must be kept in mind that having cosmetic nasal surgery will influence your entire face, and it is therefore a good idea to be very clear about what you wish to achieve with such surgery - and it has been found that younger people accept a "new" nose far easier than older people, since a totally different nose can take some time to get used to.
Recovering from rhinoplasty
After rhinoplasty you may bruise around the eyes and cheeks but the bruising should clear up within a week.
Swelling after the operation will depend on what type of technique is used and can last several weeks.
The nasal tip may be numb for some time after the operation, but feeling will gradually return after a couple of weeks.
Bleeding after the operation is not uncommon but if the bleeding is significant, the surgeon may have to have to do nasal packing.
You should be presentable enough after 10 days to resume work, but exercising should not be resumed until 4 weeks have passed.
The results of the rhinoplasty should be evident within a couple of weeks, but since some residual swelling may still be present, you will really see the final effect after about 6 months.
Medical insurance (also called medical aid schemes in some countries) does not normally cover the cost of rhinoplasty, unless it is deemed a functional necessity.
As with any surgical procedure, there are risks and potential complications, but this should be discussed with the cosmetic surgeon, as this would depend on exactly what type of procedure is decided upon.
